Episode 198: 7 Pieces of Business Advice We No Longer Believe
We’re willing to change our minds — sometimes on a whim, sometimes after years of evidence. In this episode, we’re doing both. We’re taking seven pieces of advice we used to believe wholeheartedly and telling you exactly why we’ve outgrown them.
None of this advice was wrong for its moment. It’s just incomplete — and business advice that doesn’t evolve with you eventually starts working against you.
The 7 beliefs we’re retiring — and what we believe instead:
- “Work harder.” → Hard work isn’t a strategy, it’s a multiplier — it multiplies whatever system you point it at, good or bad. We want you clever, focused, and effective, not just busy.
- “Follow your passion.” → Passion doesn’t create profit. Profit creates the freedom to be passionate. People don’t buy your passion — they buy solutions, outcomes, and transformation.
- “Have a five-year plan.” → Have a five-year vision instead, backed by an agile 6–12 month plan. A rigid five-year plan meets real life and loses every time.
- “Say yes to every opportunity.” → Every yes is an invisible no to a hundred other things. Discernment beats hustle.
- “Work-life balance.” → Balance doesn’t exist — harmony does. Everything affects everything; treating business and personal life as separate rooms is a myth we’ve both let go of, in our own ways.
- “Failure is not an option.” → Failure is one of the fastest, truest teachers we have. Fail fast, fail forward, and move on quicker.
- “The customer is always right.” → They always deserve to be heard. They’re not always right — and they don’t always know what they need. That’s exactly why they hired you.
